Volunteering

How can I get involved?

It’s wonderful to hear you want to join the forest restoration movement! If you’d like to become a partner, please get in touch with us via the contact form or write to customer@tree-peace.org. Don’t forget to share your estimated budget and let us know if you plan a one-time or recurring contribution. Reforestation is a long-term enterprise, and benefits from long-term commitments!

I have a group interested in volunteering. How do I signup and what dates are available?

Tree Peace volunteer events are listed on our website at https://tree-peace.org/pages/individuals

However, we are always looking for passionate volunteers to help within our organization. Whether its helping manage our social media accounts or organizing an event in your neighborhood. We need individuals at all levels. Fill out the contact form and we will get in touch.

I am under 18. Can I still volunteer?

All ages are welcome at all of our volunteer events. However, we ask that volunteers under the age of 18 be accompanied by at least one adult.

Can I bring my children?

Yes. All ages are welcome at our volunteer events. We ask that children are accompanied by at least one adult. For very young children, please make sure there is a one adult per two child ratio in your group. Because of the dangers with tools, planting holes, and other hazards in nature, we kindly ask that adults monitor their children at all times during planting events.

I have never planted a tree and have no idea how to care for a tree. Is this an issue?

Not at all! We will teach you! A complete demonstration will be provided at the beginning of each event to showcase the dos and don’ts of tree planting and care techniques. Supervisors will monitor each group to ensure the trees are properly planted and mulched and to answer any of your questions.

What is provided during volunteer events? Do we need to bring anything?

We will provide water, coffee, and light refreshments at each planting event. Plan on wearing long pants and closed-toe shoes, and dress appropriately for the weather, especially if rain is in the forecast. Gloves, tools, and training are provided, but please bring a water bottle, hat, and sunscreen.

Donations

Are my donations tax deductible?

Tree Peace is a 501(c)3 tax-exempt organization and your donation is tax-deductible within the guidelines of U.S. law. TAX ID # 86-3356671

If you did not receive your tax-deductible receipt, please email customer@tree-peace.org. We would be happy to send you another one.

How do you spend the money from my contribution?

For every dollar received we aim to spend 90% for tree planting projects. The other 10% is dedicated to fundraising activities and administrative costs (website maintenance & advertisement).

Can I compensate my ecological footprint with trees?

Companies and individuals can compensate their CO2 footprint with trees. To discuss your options, please get in touch with us via the contact form or send an email to customer@tree-peace.org. Please note that this is not suitable for immediate neutrality or offsetting, since the trees require many years to grow.

How much does a tree cost?

The price varies greatly on the project. Reforestation projects typically are priced out at $1 a tree sapling, which we typically plant per hectare with a target density of 2,000 trees. Community tree planting projects we focus on planting larger trees, on average 15 gallon trees. These could cost up to $250 per tree, depending on location and time of the year, because we also factor in cost to water and maintain the tree for the first 2 months.

    Emission Reduction Offsetting

What options does Tree Peace offer for carbon offsetting?

    1) Grow trees to offset your emissions over time. The trees will absorb CO2 as they grow and mature.

    2) Purchase carbon credits for immediate carbon neutrality.

Can I grow my trees in memory of someone, or send them as a gift?

Trees are a unique way to celebrate somebody you love. Anyone can donate trees by purchasing on our website or email us at customer@tree-peace.org. We will issue a certificate for you, should you need one for a gift.

    What activities should I offset?

Offsets should be used for all activities that add to your carbon footprint.

Individuals and businesses should first focus on reducing their carbon footprint the best they can. Since it is extremely difficult to reduce your carbon footprint to zero, offsets are available to mitigate the impact of the remaining emissions. The three most common and measurable activities are car travel, home energy use, and air travel. To calculate the emissions from these activities, check out our calculator

Businesses engage in a number of activities that are carbon intensive and vary based on business type. These activities include employees commutes, building energy use, servers and data storage, employee travel and shipping or other freight.  We can help you assess the major components of your business' carbon footprint. Fill out the contact form for more information.

What are the benefits of buying carbon offsets?

Carbon credits allow individuals and businesses to be accountable for their unavoidable carbon emissions. While conservation is an important first step in fighting climate change, we need to do more to reduce greenhouse gas in the atmosphere. When you purchase carbon offsets from Tree Peace you are supporting emissions reductions projects in communities throughout the world.

Knowing and offsetting your carbon footprint creates value for your organization by:

    1. Showing leadership and innovation. Taking action sends a strong message to your key stakeholders — employees, customers, and investors, many of whom will hold your business accountable for its contribution to climate change.

    2. Involving your employees. We will help communicate your business’ dedication to the environment and infuse that commitment into your company’s culture.

    3. Aligning with your customers’ values. People prefer to do business with companies whose values align with their own. Demonstrating your business’ commitment to addressing climate change with a carbon offset program will help attract and retain valuable customers.

How does Tree Peace ensure that its offset projects are really making a difference?

Prior to adding a project to our portfolio we perform due diligence to fully understand the impact of each project. All projects that we partner with have been certified by Verra's VCS ProgramThe VCS Program allows certified projects to turn their greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions and removals into tradable carbon credits. VCS is the world's largest voluntary GHG program.

Do I own the carbon offset that Tree Peace pays for?

When you purchase carbon credits from Tree Peace, we buy the carbon offsets on your behalf and retire them from the market so they can’t be traded or resold. By retiring them, we ensure that the reductions are permanent — they can never be used by another entity as a permit to pollute. You never actually take ownership of the carbon offsets themselves.

Can I deduct my carbon offset purchase from my taxes?

Businesses can treat their purchase as a tax-deductible business expense. Individuals can not deduct their carbon credit purchase from their taxes.

Can I sell carbon offsets to Tree Peace?

If you have a project that you think could qualify, feel free to send us an email at customer@tree-peace.org

Besides funding trees, what can I do to fight climate change?

There are several things you can do:

    1. Eat consciously
    2. Stop or reduce flying
    3. Reduce your energy consumption, or choose green energy
    4. Buy less, more carefully
    5. Offset what you cannot reduce
